advice is like bad breath
I was recently in a buddies wine store when I was approached by an artist who knew my work and he attempted to "corner" me (not in a physical sense but in a discussion..telling me about art like he was wise sage and I a young apprentice.) I smiled and listened and spoke very little offer save to a few ideas while he dribbled out words that were wonderfully free fro mthe burden of wisdom. I am never rude anymore, I dont waste my time-- I start itching for the door when people try to tell me about art. The minute I hear the word jasper johns the alex brain factory shuts down and I see a moving mouth and I no longer hear words. It is as if a musician told me he likes the monkees over the beatles..there is no more to tell me. I was just thinking about this person the other day and since we have met I have probably made 25 paintings, three glass etchings, two bookcovers, 600 sketches, a mural in long island, an art show on new years eve, almost completed a conversion of a novel into a screenplay, completed designs for a line of tshirts etc etc etc...-----It is always thosepeople who want to give me advice, I never offer art advice unless asked or in this blog format so it was their choice to read it. I have seen this as a common thread my whole life, people trying to tell me this or that about art. I say it is best to shut your piehole and and grab your brush or pencil and get working. I dont even have time to try to spew my view on onto other artists. I am too busy churning it out day and night. there are two kinds of artists those who talk and those who are too busy working to talk. In no way am I being mean, he wasnt a bad guy....it is just advice is like bad breath, those with the worst breath like to share it the most.

1) be thorough 2) get a momentum going 3) STAY FOCUSED! LOSE FOCUS, LOSE MOMENTUM. Ask yourself what you should be thinking about right now ...
