ART WITH GARDEGA: COLLAGE AS THERAPY

I was never a huge fan of collage as I thought it a place for people who cannot draw but liked to use scissors and glue. As time went on in art, I started experimenting with collage as a way to plane out larger pieces. I still prefer hands on materials to photoshop so I find the process therapeutic. There is something soothing about mixing images together, cutting them with scissors or a blade and gluing them in place. I do not find the same enjoyment/ therapy from photoshop and the downside of digital is there is not a true "hardcopy" (save a printout.)

I think a lot of anxiety in the world could be squelched if people would do more things with their hands. As early humans I suspect most of your day was spent doing things with your hands to keep your family alive, making baskets, sharpening tools, repairing things..etc etc. I suppose the loss of this could result in a build up of psychic energy and stress. That is why we spin fidgety things in our hands now. A good pair of scissors and a swap file. (a file of random images I have keep for 30 years) and you can get back to being a kid again who
still enjoyed art for arts sake and the act of pure creation.

If you really enjoy a piece of art, people resonate with it on a vibratory level because they have the same desire in them to express themselves. If you get really good at expressing yourself and/ or turning the sand grain in your mental oyster into
a pearl of genius someone else may even decide to pay money for that token of your anguish. I would normally throw away such studies
for "real" or finished works but I find people like to own them.I
personally am as much interested in an artist's thought process
and studies and sketches as I am the final products. I sell my studies Here.I find money to be very therapeutic and a lack of money to be the obverse.

  4. Wow - I'm stunned at the level of hate being directed at you by the great crowd of sheep! When I first saw your 'pissing dog' on an egalitarian (Christians who think women should be ministering in the same way ad in the same positions as men in the church) facebook page, and the comments about it, I was about to join in the hate - but then someone said, "what if his piece is a comment about the people who commissioned the "fearless girl' piece"? and so I went searching for why you did it. And I've got to say, I'm extremely glad I did and glad to have found your page and hopefully be able to let you know personally how much I appreciate your thinking behind "pissing dog".

When I realised who was behind "Fearless Girl" I simply could not comprehend the level of love and support it had among feminists! A trillion dollar bank with 2-3 women on its over 25 seat board commissioning a 'feminist' piece? Its appropriation of a feminist icon to advertise a banking product! You are spot on - it is not a feminist work at all - I am a feminist (ally?) and I'm prepared to argue with any male who thinks feminism is not a good thing - but your work is in no way shape or form an attack on feminism, and I simply can't understand how anyone who does even the merest click of a google search on your motives, could consider it to be so.

We will need to erect another piece; "Fearless Artist".

Thank you for doing what we expect our artists to do - to make us question ourselves and our environment and everything around us. Kudos sir, kudos.

    1. I truly wish you could live a week as a girl or woman. Images matter. Countless girls and women around the world have seen the little girl sculpture, and have been inspired. When a girl or woman tells you they are offended by Gardega's stunt, try not to disagree. Instead, try to listen to what they have to say. You might learn a lot. So many men are terribly unenlightened about how much girls and women have to struggle to maintain dignity in a world that greatly favors men.

    2. Sorry but your point is just wildly misguided, I support the arts, but there is a line to be drawn when it comes to having a little girl statue get peed on. This is questioning nothing. His explanation for why he did it was nonsensical. Just a poor movie. Stop calling people sheep when you're just a contrarian

    3. ok, so this is clearly him right?

  5. I read that you created the dog peeing on the fearless girl because you thought she was an affront to the artist of the bull and that she was corporate nonsense.

Was fearless girl the only art to be posed against another piece?

If you expect art to remain in a vacuum after it's made and never allowed to be changed, for the public reception of it to change, you don't seem like an artist to me. If art was static, I think there would be much less room for art in the world.

You say the bull had integrity. Did it have the most integrity out of all the art out there that it was so ridiculous for something else to be made?

I don't think the placement of fearless girl near the bull was such a disgrace, I don't think the bull was such an important piece of its own. I think you directly disgraced fearless girl because you knew you could. With the guise of being a male "feminist" you knew you had the potential to not only acquire a backing from overt sexists who have already mocked the piece, but you could potentially sway some liberals as well and make a name out of yourself from degrading female art.

Is fearless girl corporate? Maybe. Is it the most corporate art of today? No. It is clearly more vulnerable because it's female though, you took advantage of that to make a name for yourself. Women consistently are criticized more often than men, and their work as well. That was what you took a part in, and that's really all you accomplished.

Honestly, fuck you for being the person to attack the weakest and most vulnerable piece of "corporate" art. You attacked something in a way to make women in general feel more vulnerable, more laughable, more under attack. No one who saw your dog crap would understand it as a statement against corporations, for artistic freedom. If that's what you wanted to do, there were millions of other ways that weren't clearly attention-whoring. If what you wanted is what you said you were trying to portray with the dog, then you did a bad fucking job. Your work was crude, your work was not creative, your work was grossly exploitative.

You're an asshole. You are a chauvinist, and the worst kind, the kind that believes he is good for women and takes credit by calling himself a feminist, but attacking the work of women in the meantime to promote himself. Even if hypothetically the artist whose work you attacked was corporate, you made the clear decision to attack WOMEN artists who create art for corporate reasons rather than MILLIONS of men who have done the same.

Fuck you, and fuck every other man artist like you. I won't give another thought to you or that stunt you pulled. I don't even care to illuminate my argument further.

    1. 100% YES. I share your opinion entirely, and thank you so much for stating it so clearly and eloquently.

    2. 100% accurate... this is Alex Gardega is no artist.. he picks easy targets like Banksy Get Out Of NYC (jealous) and the Fearless Girl... actually the only time he get's any press is when he is deliberately trying to be controversial because the merit of his art doesn't garnish any attention on it's own merits.

  6. I was going to tell you what a misogynistic d bag you are but lol your life. i kinda feel sad for you. I don't know which is the most depressing: your YouTube channel, your blog, or your "10 dollar art" (knock offs of famous work that he copies and sells for $10 as a "statement against greed." C'mon, man.) Your pug bullshit isn't commentary on feminism or wall street (commentary that I'll remind you no one asked you for) it's a cheap publicity stunt to try and legitimize yourself as an artist. too bad you're only drawing attention to how mediocre you and your "work" are. no amount of attention or outrage is going to hide your lack of talent or that your ideas are very boring. I'd stick to YouTube gold leaf instructional videos if I were you, or maybe you could get like....a job.

  7. Remember when he said he was pro feminism?

From his Facebook page August 15, 2016:

"Just helped a gravity challenged woman change her tire in 100 degree heat. Only because she had a kid with her on side of the road. You think god would smile on the good samaritan act except I called her girth gravity challenged so god simply stuck me in the neutral column for my action."

  8. As an artist, you are supposed to be creative and have the capacity to see the world in a way that has an appreciation of the world around you and create art that has depth. Did you not consider how your Pissing Pug would be seen? It looks to have been hastily done and the point is lost. This was about as creative as using a sharpie to put moustaches and black out teeth on on bus stop posters. Surely in all the time it took you to sculpt and cast that piece, you couldn't think of something more creative? The girl did not diminish the bull. However, your art has diminished you.

  9. Garbage artist wants to have 3 minutes of fame. You got what you want, you are the winner for -- Dog Poop award. Worst artist of all time.

  10. Everything about your art and actions scream "PISSED OFF ARTIST WHO DIDN'T MAKE IT". Clearly you are just trying to grab attention in hopes it will bring light to your work... NEWS FLASH.... no one is interested in your work because it's out of touch and not that good... that's why your youtube channel only has a few subs. Your work diminished you as a person and it's fitting that your art is a reflection of that.

  11. sad sad man.... this pug "work" never mind what it looks like (crap) it's just not even well thought out...very short sighted of you. Then I looked at the rest of your work... the whole banksy thing... you just clearly come off as a bitter person... jealous of banksy... jealous of the Fearless Girl... you are probably jealous of every artist that find success because you feel like your art is deserving.. bbbuuuuuttttt it's not.

  12. The whole pug move... wasn't even creative... well it was creative for like a 10 year old trying to piss people off type of creative.... how is this art?
