Know your clouds---altocumulus

any clouds with alto in prefix are mid-level clouds. Unlike cirrus clouds that are made of ice crystals altocumulus are made of water vapor. They are often grey, puffy masses. If you see these in the morning during summer they may signify thunderstorms in the afternoon. They are not generally a cloud that signifies precipitation. They also form a pattern called mackerel because it resembles fish scales.
