thomas nast is considered the father of american cartooning. He was also one of the biggest voices against the corruption that was the boss tweed courthouse and Tammany hall. If I am not mistaking he is the first artist to give us the look of the modern santa clause. I have always really liked his work but I have never bought a book on him..always forget to look for em! they are not very common. I always thought he reminded me of mark twain and then I found out today he was very close friends with mark twain. I can just imagine them both sitting in mcsorleys, (maybe at the same table I sit and sketch at) drinking pints of dark beer and talking about money. The funny thing is when artists get together they generally talk finance--"how much did you get for that cover" "how much did they advance you?" "im still waiting on the check from harpers" etc. money is not taboo subject among artists--we talk freely and complain freely about our finances because art is such a brutal field it is a release valve to know your fellow artist is equally frustrated.
