art of the day: James Mcneill Whistler

James McNeill Whistler (American, Lowell, Massachusetts 1834–1903 London)
Nocturne
1878
Lithotint with scraping, on a prepared half-tint ground
6 3/4 x 10 1/8 in. (17.1 x 25.7 cm)

I love this watercolor...I have never seen it before...This is what a lot of my art looks like..stripped down, often monochrome. Not sure why the boat is so centered. I would have had it a bit more off center...I love these old creepy kinda moody watercolors. Even though this is a litho it is the same effect I often go for in my watercolors. I like art that is kind of misty, kind of outta the corner of the eye...a distant ship smoke on the horizon. Why paint like a photo? I paint for mood and feeling. If you are going to paint like a photo it should be "hyper real" because then you are commenting on photography....I see no point in pure abstraction or in trying to just recreate a photo....
