Line Quality explained.
Michelangelo___notivce how the hatching follows the form of the body. Nothing is stiff! It all flows like a river.
Leonardo's landscape! Notice the feeling, there is passion. Nothing is wasted. not lifeless rendering. You are not drawing a tree--you are drawing the feeling of a tree---an impression.
Degas---I love the line of degas. I studied and copied for years and years. There is so much character and some sadness in his lines.
Daumier---one of the greatest draftsmen of all time---He died poor...political cartooning didnt pay the bills. But picasso stole from him as did lautrec.
Hokusai. The japanese genius. I can only praise the work of the japanese. It is all about the feeling, the flow, the tao. Van gogh was influenced heavily here.
My favorite draftsman of all time---Raphael. He has the line quality of the gods. the first question I ask artists is what they think of raphael---If they dont "get it" I realize they are missing the boat and I talk to them like they are a third grader chewing crayons...In my art school the moron professors knew nothing about my hero so I dropped out. They tried to tell me about sargent who is all thumps and a gimp. They thought the idea of drawing was who could draw the most anally rendered lifeless piece of photographic crap and line meant nothing it was all form and form without life....idiots, I say!!!
VIVA THE LINE! VIVA RAPHAEL!
Here are some samples of great line quality to be followed by lifeless anal rendered examples of lifeless scribbles.
